Are we losing touch with real flavor? 🍊

Hey friends❣️

I think about this a lot. Natural flavors are being crowded out by artificial ones, and it’s changing how food tastes ~ sometimes in ways we barely notice.

Today’s new recipe celebrates the vibrancy of real citrus (and a flavor trick I’ve relied on for years.)

Orange Chocolate Chip Muffins

The secret to these muffins is the way I coax real, fresh orange flavor out of the fruit and into the batter. I wrote a post all about the technique here: How to Make Citrus Sugar. It’s a method I use in many of my citrus-forward recipes, including:

Candied Orange Peel 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Thanks for this recipe, Sue. I made quite an amount a year ago, with lemon and orange peel. Delightful. Growing up in Europe long ago, Mum (a trained chef) used candied peel very often, especially in Christmas baking, but she never made it herself. It was available as Orangeat and Zitronat in grocery shops. My next batch will include blood orange and mandarin peel. Home-made is so much better than ‘mixed peel’ from the supermarket. Thank you, Sue. And Happy New Year!!

Sue Moran

I love to make delicious food, photograph it, and write about it, but mostly, I just love to EAT. Isn’t that what it’s all about? My recipes are bold and vibrant, but totally approachable ~ and my philosophy? We should all have the tools to feed ourselves well, and the confidence to cut loose a little in the kitchen. Food should be fun!

Greek Avgolemono Soup

Hey friends❣️ I’m sharing one of my favorite soups with you today ~ it comes from sunny Greece and it’s ridiculously simple to make. If you love lemon, chicken, and rice (or pasta), you’re going to love this one. I’m also sharing a new-old bread from the 1970s. Anna Thomas herself calls it “the best bread I’ve ever made,” which is high praise from someone who defined the era and inspired so many of us with a lifelong respect for real food. Enjoy your Sunday! Greek Avgolemono Soup with Chicken...

cranberry cleanse smoothie

knead Hey friends❣️ January is an exciting food month not only because there's such a sharp pivot from the excess of the holidays, but for me it's always been a time to get back to the simpler, homier side of baking. Muffins, bundt cakes...(ok, the Brooklyn Blackout Cake made the list, but hey, there' s always room for a decadent chocolate layer cake!) One of the most delicious lemon cakes I've ever tasted tops the list... and I highly recommend the Chinese chicken salad, it's the perfect...
