S U N D A Y 🌿 on Great Island

Hey friends❣️

Happy Sunday!

It happens at the end of every season, I start pumping out all the recipes that you neeeeeed to see before the big change comes and it's too late. It's hardest in summer, when peak tomatoes meet a wall of Halloween candy and all bets are off.

But green tahini is actually a pretty perfect transition recipe. Yes, it’s made with masses of fresh green herbs, but it’s also made for slathering, dunking, and dipping all those fried and faux-fried foods that start sounding awfully good once tailgating and fireside cocktail season rolls around.

The Green Tahini Sauce I Want with Everything

Of course I want green tahini with falafel, but there is so much more...

Crispy Fried Green Beans

Fried Olives

Crispy Crab Balls

Fried Mushrooms

This week's recipe update

This was probably the first hot pepper jelly recipe I ever posted, back in 2014, and likely not long after I discovered the whole cream cheese + hot pepper jelly thing. It’s been an absolute obsession ever since, but I’m continually disappointed by the commercial versions. They’re usually too sweet, without nearly enough of a kick.

The answer, as always, is to make it yourself.

Easy No-Can Hot Pepper Jelly

spicy jams & other hot pepper jellies

  1. Old fashioned sweet and spicy tomato jam ~ make it with regular or colorful heirloom tomatoes for a unique flavor.
  2. Apricot jalapeño jam is one of my faves.
  3. Sweet hot red pepper jam is a ruby red color with an intense sweet and spicy flavor.
  4. Apple hot pepper jelly is made for fall charcuterie platters and cheese boards.

Tomato Beet Salad

Hey friends❣️ One perk of the recent lettuce recall is that I'm shopping my local farmers markets more often. This week I found the most beautiful baby beets and tomatoes, which inspired this lettuce-free salad. I was also reminded of how many great options I've got in my salad recipe collection that don't rely on greens, there's a lot to explore! Tomato and Beet Salad with Fresh Mint Vinaigrette get the recipe I’ve always been a big believer in chunky salads like these. They’re satisfying,...

August dinner transitions

Hey friends❣️ Dinner is all about transitions right now. The same ingredients can show up on the table in slightly different, warmer ways. It's subtle, but definitely there. Here’s how that looks in my kitchen. Mediterranean Pasta Salad with Tuna eases into Spaghetti with Tuna, Lemon, and Dill. Salmon Caesar Salad becomes Creamy Salmon with Lemon Sheet Pan Smash Burgers morph into Chopped Steak with Bacon and Mushroom Gravy. Sonoma Chicken Salad turns into Firecracker Chicken Meatball Bowls....

chewy almond brownies

Hey friends❣️ This is the kind of casual dessert recipe I love to develop, especially when it involves almond. Almond is one of those flavors you smell almost as much as you taste ~ its unique aroma comes largely from benzaldehyde, a compound that’s also found in the scent of flowers. It's why almond has that warm, floral, almost intoxicating quality that feels so different from other flavors. I find all of this so interesting, and it helps explain why I can't resist anything with almond....
