The Curious History of Edible Cookie Dough 🍪

Hey friends❣️

Snacking on cookie dough used to be an innocent perk of baking ~ lick the spoon, sneak a bite, no second thoughts. Then came the food-safety wake-up calls. First, raw eggs (Salmonella). Later, and more surprisingly, raw flour, after E. coli outbreaks in the 2000s showed that flour itself can carry harmful bacteria.

Home cooks tried heating their own flour, but the FDA has since warned that this isn’t a reliable solution. Only commercially heat-treated flour is considered truly safe to eat without baking.

For years that meant cookie dough lovers were out of luck, since this kind of flour was sold only in huge industrial bags. But not anymore. I’ve finally found it in home-baker quantities ~ and that’s what makes this truly edible cookie dough possible.

I love to make delicious food, photograph it, and write about it, but mostly, I just love to EAT. Isn’t that what it’s all about? My recipes are bold and vibrant, but totally approachable ~ and my philosophy? We should all have the tools to feed ourselves well, and the confidence to cut loose a little in the kitchen. Food should be fun!

Lemon Pistachio Cake

Hey friends❣️ This new cake is going on my list of favorites. I keep a running list and every once in a while I'll share it in a post or an email. I'm picky about the sweets I allow myself (since I'm around them a lot) and I've gotten pretty good at resisting, But this cake won me over. The lemon is assertive, and the addition of crushed nuts in the batter gives the cake a wonderful soft, moist crumb. It's one of those cakes that slices wafer thin, which just encourages snacking :) Lemon...

Soccer friendly snacks

Hey friends❣️ Happy Sunday! Before I get to the snacks, something's been on my mind lately... In a moment when food content can be generated on a screen in seconds, I’m still here cooking real food in a real kitchen and taking real pictures of it. Why? Because food is about as human as it gets: we literally become what we eat, after all. And food inspires real passion. We crave it, we celebrate with it, and a perfect plate of fries can make just about anything better. When I create a recipe,...
